FOREIGN LANGUAGE - Two Years Required For Graduation
*Spanish I or French I One Year Course 9, 10
Open to all students - two semester course.
This is a one year course that introduces students to the target language and culture through the five stages of language learning; recognition, imitation, repetition, variation, and selection.
*Spanish II or French II Year Course 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Two semesters of the target language.
Incoming freshmen may be advanced to this level who demonstrate proficiency in the target language verified by teacher recommendation and successful performance on Paraclete’s Foreign Language Placement Test. This is a one year course aimed at further development of oral competency, under-standing, reading, and writing skills.
*Spanish III Year Course 10,11,12
Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish I & Spanish II with a grade of “B” or better each semester and language department Course Catalog 2005-2006 10 chair approval. This course is offered to students who want to take another year of the same language in addition to the required years necessary to graduate from Paraclete High School.
*Spanish III Honors Year Course 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish I & II with a grade of “B+” or better in Spanish II and language department chair approval. This course is an advanced level elective and is designed for students who are highly motivated. Since the goal is to provide students with an adequate foundation much emphasis will be on Building vocabulary, grammar skills, listening comprehension, speaking, writing and reading selected materials.
*Spanish IV Year Course 11,12
Prerequisite: A grade of “B” in Spanish III and language department chair approval.
This course is an advanced level elective and is designed for students who want to reinforce their preparation for high level language skills. Emphasis will be on speaking, writing, and reading of selected materials.
*Spanish IV Honors Year Course 11,12
Prerequisite: A grade of “B+” or better in Spanish III and language department chair approval.
Open to students who are highly motivated and who accept the challenge of doing an in-depth study of the program, which is normally taught on the fourth level. In this course, students will review all aspects of grammar covered in the past. Since the goal is to provide students with an adequate foundation that will help them handle college work, much emphasis will be set on building vocabulary listening comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading selected materials.
*French III Year course 10,11,12
Prerequisite: A grade of “B” or better in French II.
This course aims at reviewing previously learned vocabulary, grammar and verb tenses and at expanding the knowledge of the language by studying more advanced points of the French grammar. It will include also a more intense study of the arts, cultures and civilizations of the Francophone world. Since the goal is to provide students with an adequate foundation that will help them handle college work, much emphasis will be set on vocabulary building, speaking and writing.
*French III Honors Year Course 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: A grade of “B+” or better in French I & II and language department chair approval. This course is an advanced level elective and is designed for students who are highly motivated. Since the goal is to provide students with an adequate foundation much emphasis will be on Building vocabulary, grammar skills, listening comprehension, speaking, writing and reading selected materials.
*French IV Year Course 11,12
Prerequisite: A grade of “A” in French III.
This course is an advanced level elective and is designed for students who want to reinforce their preparation for college. Ability to do independent study is required. Emphasis will be on speaking, writing, and reading of selected French materials.
*French IV-Honors Year Course 11, l2
Prerequisite: A grade of “A” in French III.
Open to students who are highly motivated and who accept the challenge of doing an in-depth study of the program, which is normally to review all aspects of the grammar that have been covered in the past and delve into the complex structures of the French syntax. Students enrolled in this course must have shown the ability to also do independent work taught on the fourth level.
