SCIENCE --Two years required for graduation

Health One Semester 9
Required for freshmen.
This course is designed to use the processes of science to explore basic knowledge of the human body, personal hygiene, environmental care, nutrition, and the causes, prevention and cures of various diseases.

*Biology Year Course 9*, 10,11,12
This course is designed to increase the student’s skill in using the processes of science. It is a one-year college preparatory laboratory-oriented course that considers structure, reproduction and heredity of the individual, and emphasizes adaptation in evolution and behavior in order to place man in his proper relationship to the biosphere. * Those freshmen who qualify for the summer Computer/Health program may take Biology as 9th graders.

*Honors Biology Year Course 9*, 10,11,12
Prerequisite: The student must have a current cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, AND must write a 1- page essay explaining why he/she wants to be in Honors Biology.
This will be a laboratory science course that goes beyond the normal biology course. Honors Biology gives an in-depth look at the biosphere, the many organisms within it, and the systems and functions of those organisms. This course will emphasize individual research, reports, and critical thinking.

* Those freshmen who qualify for the summer Computer/ Health program may take Biology as 9th graders.

*AP Biology Year Course 11,12
Prerequisite: (A) if the student is a senior, he/she must have completed sophomore biology and chemistry with a “C” or
higher. (B) If the student is a, junior he/she must have completed sophomore Honors Biology with a “B” or higher and must also be taking chemistry their junior year. AP Biology is a college level biology course for motivated high school juniors and seniors. The course content follows the suggested outline for a “typical” college biology course developed by the College Entrance Board. AP Biology covers three areas of biological principles that were introduced in sophomore Biology: (l) molecules and cells, (2) genetics and evolution, (3) organism and populations. It aims to provide students with the framework and analytical skills necessary to understand the rapidly growing science of Biology.

*Chemistry Year Course 11,12
Prerequisite: Algebra I and Biology—two semesters each. Minimum Algebra I grade “C” (73%) each semester, minimum Biology grade “C” (73%) each semester.
A one-year college preparatory laboratory science including structure of matter and chemical bonding, energy relationships, balancing equations, the periodic table, states of matter, gas laws, solutions, ionization’s, equilibrium stoichiometric chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry and nuclear chemistry. (Science majors are required to take this course. Required for U.C. schools).

*Physics Year Course 12
Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Chemistry--two semesters each with a minimum grade of “C” (73%) each semester in each course. Recommended: concurrent enrollment or previous passage of Pre-calculus. A one year college preparatory laboratory course covering vectors, motion, Newton’s Laws, forces, potential and kinetic energy, momentum, heat, waves, sound, light behavior, electrostatics, and electricity. (Science majors are required to take this course for most colleges and universities).

*Anatomy Year Course 12
Prerequisite: Biology and chemistry -two semesters each with a minimum grade of “C” (73%) each semester in each
course.
A one year college preparatory laboratory course is designed to introduce the student to the structure and function of
human anatomy. Areas covered in depth will include: cells-tissues, skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, respiratory,
cardiovascular, urinary, endocrine and reproductive systems. Throughout these topics principles of physiology will be introduced.

*Physical Science Year Course 11,12
Students who do not qualify for Chemistry and need an additional lab course to meet graduation requirements are to enroll in this course. This course is the study of the composition and properties of matter and energy, including the two disciplines of Physics and Chemistry. The course will emphasize thinking skills, an application of technology and the practical application of scientific principles. Does not satisfy the A-G science requirement at UC but is accepted as an elective.

*UC approved
